Minneapolis, MN
Q: What do you do for a job? What kind of art do you create?
A: My paying job is an artist. I am a painter and I specialize in oil landscapes on canvas. I sell both my original oil paintings as well as prints of my work. My paintings are focused on light, often seen in trees, pathways, and sunsets and sunrises over water. I use a combination of brush and palette knife techniques, creating smooth and blended areas along with thick, almost tactile, trees and foregrounds. This leads my work to falling into a representational genre, however, when viewing from close-up I definitely have some impressionistic influences in my brush work.
Q: Do you have a formal post-secondary education? If so, from where and what was your focus?
A: Yes, I received a Bachelors of Arts in Fine Art & Health at Luther College in Decorah, IA. As a Fine Arts major, I focused a lot of my classes on Independent painting. Although I took classes in weaving, pottery, and watercolor, I fell in love with oils my senior year in high school and fostered that love in college. Today, it is still my medium of choice!
Q: When did you realize of your interest in art?
A: For as long as I can remember I have had an interest to create. I loved to draw in elementary school, and art class was by far my favorite! I believe it was my junior year in high school during a painting critique that I had my first ah-ha moment and knew in my heart that I wanted a career in art.
Q: How do you keep current with your artistic craft?
A: Practice, practice, practice! Since having children 3 years ago, I certainly am not behind my easel as much as I once was, however, I am finally back to work and keeping current by making sure I am painting weekly (used to be daily), having my art represented in local twin cities galleries, and having shows/exhibits throughout the year. Also, from the business end of being an artist, I stay current by having an online gallery website and active in social media.
Q: What inspires you and your art?
A: My inspirations are also what keeps me current in my art. When I am out in nature, I feel a deep connection to this earth and my heart bursts with feelings of beauty and peace that I want to share on canvas.
So, what inspires me? Everything, really. Beauty, love, kindness, compassion, peace, mystery, the spiritual world, the goodness in others. I feel and find all of these, and so many more inspirations when I am in nature. It is at these moments of pure inspiration when I feel closest to God and have come to understand who I believe we really are, or who we are called to be.
This is what inspires me to create and share my light-filled paintings. If each of us can find that divine spark within and follow the light of love and peace, I believe true healing and transformation of ourselves and our world can and will happen.

TEACHER NOTE:
Mrs. Dull is a mutual friend of a coworker. When I saw her paintings for the first time, I fell in love with the play of light and nature. There is a serenity in the details of leaves and plants that is captures by a single moment. The amount of color that is within these paintings is phenomenal and the delicacy of her painting makes the viewer almost feel the warmth of the sun, hear the sound of the wind through the trees, and see the vibrations of movement in the leaves.
